You know, us word-gamers are sitting ducks for comedians. There is, after all, something a tad bizarre about a person who takes the World Scrabble Championship as seriously as the Superbowl. Some wordies fight this perception by trying to convince the world that there is as much glory to be had in winning the National Spelling Bee, or the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, as there is in claiming an Olympic gold. Personally, I don't think you should bother trying to convince anybody of anything. Just enjoy what you enjoy, with others who are like-minded, and don't take yourself too seriously. Spelling ChucklesLike a few of the chuckle-worthy vids on this page, the next one is a segment from Cheap Seats. If you're not familiar with the show, Cheap Seats was a comedy program on ESPN hosted by two brothers who played tapes of old ... shall we say 'lesser watched' ... sports broadcasts and made fun of them. Serious fun. Needless to say, Spelling Bees and Scrabble tournaments were perfect fodder...
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that the next one made me laugh out loud. Maybe it means I'm getting old, but it was just one of those silly little jokes that tickled a long-lost funny bone. I had to listen to it three times before I could make out all the words through that thick Scottish tongue, and he screws up the start and has to start over. But, you know what? I kinda liked that about it...
Scrabble ChucklesI introduced you to Cheap Seats earlier on this page. This is a very funny two part episode dissecting a major Scrabble tournament. If you're a tournament Scrabble player yourself, you'll recognize quite a few faces in this one. Heck, one of them might even be yours...
Balderdash ChucklesIf you're a fan of Balderdash, like I am, you'll be able to relate to this one.Remember back in primary school when the kid next to you would start laughing, and then you would start laughing uncontrollably with him, even though you had no idea what he was laughing about? And remember how the more your teacher told you to cut it out, the more outrageous and unstoppable the laughter became? Well, that's what Balderdash does to me, and this clip captures it really well. I especially like the grumpy dad at the back of the room who wants his wife to play properly - there's always one of them isn't there? There aren't any jokes in it - it's just pure Balderdash...
