These Vocabulary Quizzes Improve Spelling Dramatically
But only if you stick at it!
Frequent, targeted, vocabulary quizzes are by far the most effective way to improve spelling, reading comprehension, and your everyday word power. Let's look at an example of the kind of quizzes researchers recommend, and then I'll explain things a bit more...
That was a snippet from a session with the spelling tutor I subscribe to. It was recently recommended to Word-Buff by multiple American spelling bee champion, David Riddle. The way it works is this. You specify a starting vocabulary level, and the program builds a personalized spelling list for you from a database of over 150,000 words (last time I checked, but it's being topped up daily!). You take a spelling quiz, like the one I just showed you, on a regular basis, and the system keeps track of your performance. Once you get a word right three times, it is removed from your personal spelling list so you don't waste time on words you already know (just as the experts tell us to do). Most importantly, the program includes audio buttons so you can actually hear words pronounced along with sample sentences before you attempt to spell them. The words are pronounced by a variety of speakers too, which helps you get used to different ways the word is likely to be spoken. I think my annual subscription works out to be a bit over 20 cents a day. Not bad considering all the work it saves me, like compiling spelling word lists (with example sentences!), maintaining performance spreadsheets, getting people to test me, and so on. If it sounds like it might help you, just click on the image below, which will take you to the right form. - TIP! — Make sure you type wordbuff in the place I've circled in red, when a prompt says I was referred by. That way, if you decide you like it, you'll automatically get a cheaper price I've negotiated for my visitors ;-)

But don't stop when the novelty wears off. The magical effect of these spelling and vocabulary quizzes will only reveal itself through long-term persistence!
