After all, it sounds very clinical and not at all warm and welcoming. This especially applies if you have a busy life and want to fit in a little learning on the side.
In fact, it can provide you with a really good excuse as to why you may want to leave self improvement until you have more time... which, of course, would be never.
There are shortcuts you can take to improve your vocabulary without taking up too much time or scaring you to death though and the top five shortcuts are outlined below for you:
1.
Take advantage of software packages that can build your vocabulary in as little at 10 minutes a day. Ultimate Vocabulary is one example of the packages available. All you have to do is logon to the software as and when you have a spare few moments and play just one of the games or complete an exercise and you will find that your knowledge soon begins to mount up. There are few other solutions that can help you in 10 minutes.
2.
Use the Internet. There are facilities available online that can generate words of the day for you. Most online dictionary facilities offer this particular service and can provide you with a new word every day. All you have to do then is learn the word and its context. However, you should be sure to use the word regularly because that is the only way the knowledge will stick and vocabulary building will be successful.
3.
Solve crosswords in your newspaper every day. You are guaranteed to come across at least one word that you do not know in the puzzle so you get the meaning and the word delivered to you in a way that you are likely to remember. This can be a frustrating way of building your vocabulary but it is very effective.
4. Set aside at least 30 minutes a day to
read. Choose a book that appeals to you but you are likely to find words that you do not know in. From there, you should write down any words that you are not sure of as and when you encounter them and look up their meaning. This is fantastic way of vocabulary building because you already have the context of the word and one use of it right there in front of you.
5. Finally, simply
use a dictionary to identify ten words that you do not know and use post its to put the words and an example of their use in strategic places around the house. You will subconsciously take them in and may well be surprised at how easy vocabulary building actually is.
I know some of them are a bit obvious, but the key I think is to
actually do them. I hope that helps.
