There is no taboo associated with vocabulary building but it is not a language skill that many individuals focus on. However, if you want to improve in this particular department there are ways and means of going about it and one is particularly convenient – doing puzzles.
Puzzles are not often considered to be useful in terms of vocabulary building because they are instead perceived as exercising other areas of mental intellect, such as memory and logic. However, puzzles can also help to enhance your vocabulary if used in the correct way.
Crosswords are particularly useful for such purposes, as are word searches, so starting with those puzzles will be particularly effective.
This technique for improving your vocabulary is not a complete way of doing so. It will help you to build your vocabulary but it is largely dependent on the puzzle itself in terms of the words you learn. You cannot pick and choose the answers to the clues. You should note that prior to following the method outlined below.
In terms of using the puzzles to improve your vocabulary, it is actually fairly easy to do. If you are using a crossword then you will need a thesaurus and you will also need to choose a puzzle that you believe is a little outside of your current vocabulary range.
From there, try to solve the clues as you would normally, putting each word into an effective sentence as you go. For the clues that you cannot solve, you should identify the answers using a thesaurus and commit them to memory by using them several times.
On the other hand, if you want to use word searches as the puzzles to improve your vocabulary then it is a little easier to find a puzzle that contains words that you are unaware of or do not use.
Do the puzzle as you normally would but place each word in an effective sentence as you go. If you are satisfied with the sentence then move on to the next but if you do not know the meaning of the word or how to use it then spend more time committing it to memory.
As you can see, puzzles provide a quick and easy way of improving your vocabulary. You will soon be experiencing words that you have either never heard before or do not yet have in your vocabulary. Providing that you take the time to learn the words, their meaning and how to use them rather than rushing through the puzzles and failing to retain the knowledge then you will find this tip incredibly effective.
