Missing a turn

by Amanda Niciak
(Sydney, Australia)

My sister and I play Scrabble each year on holidays. This year, she said to me that she would miss a go... I then played my tiles....she didn't throw her tiles out but just sat there....after my go...she then got a seven letter word based on my last go and got one big score.

Is that legal? Or is it just poor play?

Hi there Amanda. I'm afraid your sister was perfectly within her rights to miss a turn - the rules certainly permit it.

Since it worked out quite nicely for her, I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'poor play'. Do you mean that it seems a bit 'unsporting' perhaps?

Expert players certainly don't consider it 'bad form' to take full advantage of the rules to increase their chances of winning, and this is one move (well, non-move really!) that they'll do from time to time.

Strategically, it isn't often considered to be a good move because a strong opponent will usually guess what you're up to and therefore play a move that is as unhelpful to you as possible.

More often, an expert will exchange one or more of their tiles instead of playing a move, in order to increase the chance of playing a bingo next move.

I hope that helps,

Where to find the Scrabble rules
by: Derek

Hi Amanda,

In answer to your question about Scrabble rules, here are a few thoughts...

1. Your Scrabble set should come with a booklet of rules (or perhaps they are printed on the box or lid). These rules are pretty clear about the bigger issues.

2. If you visit the websites of Mattel and Hasbro - the owners of Scrabble - you'll find (at least in the latter case) a statement of the main rules.

3. I'm starting to compile a list of frequently debated Scrabble rules which I've published here...
Scrabble Rules that Cause Arguments

It's in its early stages, but bookmark it now, and you'll see I update it quite often.

4. If you really want to get obsessive about rules, here is a link to the very long and comprehensive rule book used by the World English Scrabble Players' Association (WESPA)...

Scrabble rules & passing
by: Trevor

Most, if not all, of the rules of scrabble are covered at Scrabble Rules

The only advice I would give you if you are playing an opponent that passes a go is to assume that they have a 7 letter word and have nowhere to play it. In reality the tactic is quite naive and quite easy to defend against, simply make a play that does not create any more openings and at the same time try to make a decent score. Most importantly if there are now words that take an S available dont stick one up and make life easy for them, try to tuck a little 2-3 letter word into a good spot, ok they may pass again but will start to rethink if you keep chipping away at your score.

Thanks

Dear Derek

Thanks. I think I was just out smarted by older sister. I will be better informed next year for the family challenge. Can you suggest a site where I can read up on all the RULES. Merry Christmas
