Helping Your Child to Increase Vocabulary at Home

It is a fact that parents want what is best for their children in all areas of their life and this particularly applies to his or her education. After all, the individual child learns now may well set the tone for his or her progress later on in life.

How Many
Did You Know?

Flashcards like these are my favorite way to learn new words. There are quite a few programs and courses out there you can use to build your vocabulary this way, but if you want to know my absolute favorite Click Here.
It is a proven fact that any child that falls behind early on struggles to pull it back as they progress through the school system and this may indeed cause significant problems in terms of educational success, career progression and even behavioral difficulties.

If you feel that your child is falling behind at school then do not worry or panic. Helping your child to increase vocabulary at home can really make all the difference.

There are ways and means to help your child increase his or her vocabulary. The points below should give you a little inspiration as to how to do so:
  • Bedtime Reading – Research has proved that encouraging your child to participate in bedtime reading can help to increase vocabulary. It is an interactive activity that introduces a child to a range of new words and provides the supervision that he or she needs to be able to learn effectively. It also acts as a bonding exercise so it can help to increase your child’s overall confidence too.

  • Flash Cards – Flash cards have been used for years in schools, preschools and other educational institutions to encourage vocabulary building. Increasing the vocabulary often begins with them and therefore you can use them to expand it even further. Flash cards can be used in a variety of fun games too so they are ideal for improving your child’s education.

  • Word Games – Following on from the previous point, word games are also very effective in attempting to increase vocabulary. They are a lot of fun and are again interactive. As they also challenge your child and earn a lot of praise when played well, they often work without your child realizing it.

  • Vocabulary Software – Finally, the latest and arguably the most effective way of increasing vocabulary for a child. Vocabulary software comes in a variety of forms but the best packages offer a range of methods of learning, a range of games and a comprehensive range of words to learn. All you have to do is install it and then supervise to help your child get ahead of the rest of the class.

All four of the above methods are excellent in helping increase vocabulary of the most resistant child. You can use these techniques even if your child is not falling behind to help reinforce the learning provided by the school.

One thing is for sure though – you can give your child the best possible start by helping to enhance his or her vocabulary.
