A Real Page Turner - How Reading Can Help Facilitate a Vocabulary Increase

Do you enjoy reading? Although it is not as popular a pastime today as it used to be a few decades ago (largely thanks to technology it has to be said), reading is still one of the most cited hobbies on application forms for college enrolment, employment and club or group membership.

Did You Know?

Flashcards like these are my favorite way to learn new words. There are quite a few programs and courses out there you can use to build your vocabulary this way, but if you want to know my absolute favorite Click Here.
If it happens to be on your hobby list then you are actually providing your brain with a whole host of advantages that you may not, as yet, be aware of. One advantage is that it can cause a huge vocabulary increase without you even realizing it.

Anything that increases your vocabulary should be welcomed into your life with open arms because it provides mental stimulation, increased intellect, greater career opportunities, better grades at school or college and even more respect from those people that you speak to.

Reading is certainly one of the key pastimes in terms of developing language skills and can help you to achieve all of the above.

However, you may want to know exactly how reading can help facilitate a vocabulary increase. Well, think about how the mind works. An inactive mind will fall into certain habits. It will adopt speech patterns and word usage that smacks of simple vocabulary because the words taught during his or her education will be lost if they are not used often enough.

Video games and watching TV are two of the pastimes that cause a mind to become inactive because they do not challenge it. Reading, on the other hand, does because it introduces new words and reintroduces those already learned as well as their context. As such, reading can encourage your mind to become active and can ensure that your vocabulary expands rather than shrinking as you get older.

Reading newspapers and magazines as well as books is highly recommended by many language experts because they argue that the more diverse the range of materials you read, the more diverse the range of vocabulary.

For example, the New York Times is likely to introduce you to a completely different vocabulary range to a Maya Angelou novel. Embracing both levels of vocabulary can really help you to become more intelligent and better placed to take full advantage of opportunities that prevent themselves.

Reading at every opportunity is important but what if you cannot read on a daily basis? How can you enjoy a vocabulary increase then? Well, there are software options that offer reading exercises available.

Reading information in this way can be just as useful as reading a book so be sure to take every opportunity to read and increase your vocabulary for an overall improvement in your life.
